The birth of a new calf is an exciting event – and we are always thankful when things go well. But, even then, sometimes there is a hint of disappointment mixed in with the joy.
We are pleased to welcome our new bull calf – yet to be named – and are very thankful that he and his first-time mom are healthy and contented. But, we sure were hoping for a heifer calf!
Building a herd of cows takes a long time compared to pigs and rabbits. Why? Long gestation period – 9 months, and usually single births of calves means it takes a lot longer to build successive generations. And, it takes even longer when your cows drop bull calves.
Far be it from me to complain – LOL! – but we are three for three so far! Three calves – all male! I guess the testosterone level just runs too high on New Norm Farm! 🙂
On the plus side though – the calves will have good, happy, lives and one day be full grown, grass-fed cows ready to provide us with some of the healthiest, tastiest, tenderest (Is that a word?) cuts ever to grace the plates of a happy farm family. YUM!
