Hello and welcome to the Spring ‘13 edition of the New Norm Farm newsletter. It used to be normal for folks to know where their food came from, the name of the farmer who raised it and the methods used. But then came the age of factory farms and big agribusiness. Now-a-days only five percent of the food consumed in an area is actually grown there. Most food travels an average of 1500 miles before landing on your dinner table. Cruel confinement farms, genetically altered food, steroids and excessive use of antibiotics have become the norm. But, according to Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm in Virginia, it’s time for a new normal (hence the name – New Norm Farm) and a return to locally produced food.
In case you’ve missed all six of Joel’s books, Michael Pollan’s book The Omnivore’s Dilemma as well as both the documentary films, Food, Inc. and Fresh, Joel is a self-described “Christian-libertarian-environmentalist-capitalist-lunatic-farmer”. He is the founder of the clean-food movement as well as the pastured poultry system we’re following here at New Norm Farm. Joel’s grass-based farming system produces the highest quality meats he named “beyond organic”.
Following his methods helps ensure that at New Norm Farm our berries and produce are pesticide-free and that our animals are well-cared for and being raised in an environmentally responsible manner and in a system that is both ecologically beneficial and truly sustainable.
So if you have a hankerin’ for the freshest, tastiest food on earth – give us a try. You’ll be so glad you did!
