My good friend told me that you can mix a few ounces of Pure Cold Pressed Orange oil Concentrate in 3 gallons of water to pour over the ant mound. Usually good to break the mound open with a shovel first to make sure it gets in well. It will make the ants move on.

A Bearded Farm Journal – Day 11
Sunday February 4th, the past week has been very draining. On the farm we have a stomach bug that seems to be passing back and forth between the kids. It seems to be cycling through the kids, by the time one is starting to feel better the other kiddos are showing symptoms and then it repeats. It has been late nights, lots of essential oils, hot showers, and holding kids all night. Pray that the kids get better soon. With that said we have been happy just to get the basics done on the farm.
Here is a little update on some of the happenings on the farm:
- Our calf Nicholas had a cyst on his upper jaw that looked like he was chewing tobacco. We lanced the cyst and drained out all of the puss and infection. We cleaned it out really well and it is looking good.
- We did a quick till on the raised garden beds and have begun the process to get them ready for planting. We didn’t get them covered before winter so there is more clean up to do then we want but still going to be easier than last year.
- Kassy the Homesteading Momma has started some cold weather seeds like broccoli, cabbage, and more.
- The chickens are spreading wood chips and prepping our other garden area
- Our daily rotation for our beef cattle is still going well
- We moved Daisy and Poppy to a different stall area and have prepared the stall where they were for Penelope as it is getting close to time for her piglets to be born.
- We cleaned out under the rabbits and put the manure on the garden spot that will be covered with wood chips.
- This past week I have been switching our website over to Bluehost it was a little challenging as it was the first time I switched hosting accounts but well worth it.
Hope this sickness gets off the farm soon so we can get back on track for spring.
Well, till next time. Get in the Dirt & Get Growing!!!

It’s Time to Get Growing
Spring is almost here and it is time to get those seeds started for the garden. Don’t let those thoughts of it being to hard stop you. This is the year to start that garden that you always wanted and grow fresh vegetables for you and your family. Here are a few steps to help you get started.
1. Start with organic planting soil
– We used Whitney Farms Planting Soil
2. Fill your container about 1/2-3/4 of the way
– We re-use plastic containers(ones with clear lids make great little green houses)
3. Make small holes for the seeds
4. Put one seed in each hole (on the back of each seed packet is recommendations for how deep to plant each seed.)
5. Cover with a little dirt
6. Add a little water
7. Put in a green house or window seal to germinate the seeds (germination time is on the seed packet)
Notes: Be sure to label each container so you will know what seed was planted and date planted. Keep the soil moist.
We enjoy planting with the kids and getting them excited about growing their own food. It is great family time and we recommend it for you.
