This year we decided to add pigs to the farm diversity. It has been a fun adventure so far. Last week I posted a on Facebook about training the pigs to electric fence. They learned fast and have been in their new paddock for the last 5 days and no escapes…well maybe there was one.
When first moved the pigs into a full electric paddock, one pig did test the fence. He got shocked and backed up into the other pigs which were right behind him. Of course this made him run forward through the fence. Pigs stick together, so they all followed him.
We had a fun time rounding them back up. It was me(Kyle), my pregnant wife (Kassy), our three children (Elijah, Nehemiah, and Abigail), and Papaw (Don my dad). It took a little time but we got them back into the new paddock which has a little wooded area. They went straight into the wooded area and stayed for a while. They finally explored the new paddock and quickly learned not to check the fence. Now they love it. Here is a video:
What I love about this type of fencing for the pigs is that you can keep them any where. This new paddock is next to our house that is close to the road and it is where we eventually plan to put in an orchard. The pigs do a great job of prepping the ground and make it a lot easier to clear the brush. At the same time the fencing allows us to fully utilize the pigs around the farm and lets them be pigs. Another great part is that people driving by don’t even know we have pigs there. No need for big buildings to confine them. Just simple fencing which is they way we like it.
Stick with us as we grow our family farm and make Local Food Production the Norm – Again!
